Q & A REPLIES

Interview with the Commercial News 2003:

Ward 2 covers where Strebing lives now in the Heights and where he grew up as a child on Texas Ave

Strebing said the biggest issue facing the city is the economy and keeping good jobs here. Good jobs attract people and families to live here, he said.

City officials need to focus on bringing retail businesses here and work with businesses currently in Danville to make sure they stay, he said.

In Ward 2, Strebing said empty lots are a problem and have caused neighborhood deterioration.

He said the city's partnership with Habitat for Humanity and placing manufactured homes on the lots are two approaches to get homes back on the lots and put the lots back on the tax rolls.

Strebing said residents should vote for him because he is a lifelong resident, raised his children here and is a homeowner and landlord "My roots are here. I care about the area," he said.

Strebing said he'll bring a lot of common sense to the position."

You've got to be willing to listen to people," he said. "You have to understand you're not going to make people happy all of the time."

If elected, Strebing said as a new person on the council, he could bring in new ideas. "One of  us is not as smart as all of us," he said.

Strebing is a Danville Housing Authority board member. Other involvements include the Knights of Columbus.

Strebing added that he also has contract negotiation experience. He previously was vice president for AFSCME Local 2052 for five years.

ISSUES & POSITIONS

Rick Strebing three primary issues in his campaign were

Revitalization of Neighborhoods

Economic Stimulus

Leaf Burning

Revitalization of Neighborhoods: To evoke Positive change in the area. I stated that we should help the older neighborhoods so that they do not run down, as the oak Lawn area has done over the past few years. To keep these fine old neighborhoods up to par, and seek grants to help in these areas.

Action: On June 17th 2003 I voted for demolition of several abandoned and run down homes in these neighborhood

Economic Stimulus: We need to continue to promote and help with getting new Companies and businesses here. Seek to upgrade with new stores at the Village Mall and Downtown Area.

Leaf Burning: First barrier is the cry cannot afford to pick up the leaves, or start a program to do so. A leave burning ordinance would require set times that leaves could be burned.
